Before setting out on your practical test your examiner will ask you one question regarding the upkeep of you vehicle. A further question will be asked during th test.


Getting these questions wrong will result in the examiner awarding a driver fault. As this is at the beginning of your test it is one of the first impressions your examiner will have of you, remember

Q1 Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey

A1 Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should then be tested as you set of to make sure they do not pull to one side.

Q2 Tell me where you would find the information for the recomended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked.

A2 Where= Manufacturers Guide
What = A reliable guage
When = When tyres are cold
After = Replace dust caps
Also = Check spare tyre

Q3 Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.


A3 The head restraint should be adjusted so thethe rigid part of the head restraint isat least as high as the eye or top of the ear and as close to the head as is comfortable.

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and their condition is safe for use on the road.
A4 Tread depth should be a minimum of 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and all around the full circumference, there should be no cuts or bulges.

A5 I would switch on the ignition then switch on the headlights and tail lights get out
and walk round the vehicle.

8 I would switch on ignition press the brake pedal and make use of reflections or get someone to help.

Q9 Tell me how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.



A9 If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Gently pressure on the steering whell, maintained whilst starting the engine should result in slight movement of the steering wheel.

Q10 Tell me how you would the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them


A10 Turn on headlights and fog lights, explain fog lights should be used when visibility is less than 100metres
